Floating and Sinking Fun
We had lots of fun today testing out different objects to see which ones floated and which ones sank. We discovered that an orange with its peel on floats but sinks if you remove the peel! We came up with some really good explanations for why this happens.
We made lava lamps using oil, water, food colouring and salt. The oil floated on top of the water and the food colouring kept floating and sinking depending on how much salt we added.
We were challenged to make a ball of play dough float without adding or taking anything away.
We finished the afternoon with a dancing raisin experiment. We added raisins to lemonade and at first they sank to the bottom, but then the carbon dioxide bubbles stuck to them and they started to bob up and down, as if they were dancing.
